Oasis!

Dear Fellow Travelers….

Our last OASIS of the Spring is upon us!  This coming Sunday, May 20th at 5 p.m., we’ll meet for a FABULOUS DINNER of fire-roasted skewers of beef, chicken and/or shrimp cooked by Mike Lynch and Pastor James.  The church will provide corn-on-the-cob, beverages and paper products, as well.  The rest of the meal will be POTLUCK, so everyone is invited to bring a salad, dessert or picnic munchies to share. We hope to eat in the pavilion if the weather cooperates.  Feel free to come early to help with set-up.

VESPERS will feature the Faith Stories of Kim & Rachel Borczyk, as well as the music of our talented Praise Band.  It’s sure to be inspiring. The scriptures selected by Kim and Rachel are:
   ~ Psalms 116:1-2
“I love the Lord because he hears my prayers and answers them. Because he bends
down and listens I will pray as long as I breathe.” (The Living Bible)
   ~ Matthew 11:28-30
   ~ Psalm 77:19
   ~ Luke 12:22-28
   ~ Psalm 121:1-2

The youth group will celebrate the upcoming birth of Baby Marks, our youth director, Sarah Marks and husband Jeff’s baby girl, due July 4th.  The Youth Group BABY SHOWER will be held in the EUCC.  Please see Kim Borczyk or Vonna Miller to contribute to ourCONGREGATIONAL GIFT for Baby Marks. Last-minute contributions are welcome.

The other SMALL GROUPS will meet as usual and then head to the baby shower about 7:20 or so for a special prayer. Our KIDS CLUB will also meet with Sharon Maher leading a cool craft.

Please note that we are hosting IHN beginning May 20th, so the Sunday School hallway & rooms are reserved as accomodations for our guests.  Kennedy Hall is available for our use.

We’re sure to have a wonderful evening of inspiration and renewal.

Sign Up to Volunteer at GA Today!

It’s been over a half century since Pittsburgh Presbyterians hosted this awesome event and in three months it will be here again – 220th General Assembly on June 30-July 7 at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center. We are building momentum and a successful General Assembly depends upon you! Volunteer your time, talent and treasure! Some of the opportunities are:
communion servers, prayer intercessors, members for the combined choir, greeters for hotels, airport, and the convention center, and other hospitable tasks to greet participants from coast to coast and around the world.

If these interest you, come and be a part of the GA Team! For more information about GA or to offer your help, go to www.PghPresbytery.org and press the “Sign Up for GA Today” button. There you will be able to check out all the exciting and pertinent information. The “Volunteer” button thoroughly explains the sign up process. Teens are also encouraged to help at GA and this is also explained on the “Volunteer” webpage. Here’s a hot tip: first press the “Mission & Cultural Tours” button to view all the tours for our GA guests. Perhaps you will find the perfect way to offer your talents for our GA visitors.

Dear Friends in…

Dear Friends in Christ,

Hope you are having a good week! This Sunday each worship will be different this week.

Contemporary Worship Service: The Bluegrass band Homecookin’ (featuring our own Dave Cook!) will be worship leaders for our Contemporary Service. I will welcome and pray at the beginning and say a benediction at the end, but Pastor Jerry Pawloski (of Bairdford Methodist…and leader of Homecookin’) will weave his message among the songs the band will sing. It promises to be a rousing, toe-tappin’ service.

Traditional Worship Service:  The Traditional Service will feature me preaching a sermon titled “Touch and See.” My text is a resurrection appearance of Jesus to the disciples where they, at first, think he is a ghost. He assures them he is not, and then offers for them to touch him. Not only that, he asks to be given some fish that he can eat. Ghosts can neither be touched, nor consume food! It really is Jesus! The risen Christ wants to be near, to be really touched, to be believed. I am also aware that Sunday is Earth Day, which is not a religious holiday, but one that can draw attention to the beauty and complexity of God’s creation. We get to “touch and see” God’s creation every day.

Hope to see you Sunday. Have a blessed week.

Peace,

James

Alleluia

May God sparkle in all of us

   as sunlight upon water,

May we radiate for each other

   compassion and hope,

May our work be fruitful,

   our joys profound,

   our pain redemptive,

May our discpleship be rooted

in the very life of God.

May we be for each other,

   for family, for friends,

   for those in need,

   for those especially

whose faith has come to staleness

   and whose hope has died

– a burgeoning ALLELUIA

– light and peace and simplicity

– full gratitude, full openness

May we take nothing less for granted

   than the life we seek

   to build up in common.

May we suffer the pain of a

   fully generous love.

May we remain steadfast

in the shadow of the cross,

And rise to meet the passion

   of this world

Relying always

on the untiring good Spirit of our God.

                                                         Amen.

A Few Words From Pastor Jo

Dear Friends in Christ,

Thanks again to all of you who helped make last evening’s Healing & Wholeness Service meaningful and moving.  The music was uplifting, and God’s Spirit surrounded us.

This Sunday marks the fifth Sunday of Lent—the final worship service before Palm Parades, Passion Processions and Holy Week. On this final sabbath in the wilderness with Jesus, we will consider ‘repentance.’

The notion of repentance appears in both the Old and New Testaments.  What does it mean to repent?  First, we’ll follow the circuitous journey Jonah took to Ninevah, a text in which every character repents. Then, we’ll ask ourselves how we might have responded to Jesus’ call to repent, to leave our nets and follow Him.

     Together, we will explore…
           First choices and second chances,
                Limited vision and vast mercy,
                       Unexpected invitations and courageous decisions…

We appreciate your faithful work and leadership.  May God be with us.

Lenten Blessings,
      Pastor Jo
